6 Bollywood Divorces that Didn’t Take the Triple Talaq Path

The Supreme Court of India, in a landmark judgement on 22 August declared the practice of instant triple talaq as void and illegal. The apex court, referring to several countries where triple talaq has been abolished, asked why independent India so far had failed to get rid of this draconian practice.

Bollywood couples, however, have been more liberal in taking the legal route instead of the then admissible triple talaq system to end their marriages. Here are six examples

1. Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta

The two got married in 1986 and decided to part ways 15 years later. They divorced in 2002. Their children Junaid and Ira accepted the decision of their parents and have since been living with Reena. Aamir later married Kiran Rao whom he met on the sets of Lagaan.

2. Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora

It was one of the most hyped marriages in Bollywood. Saif Ali Khan, son of former India captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and eminent actress Sharmila Tagore, exchanged wedding vows with Amrita Singh in 1991, who was then at the high noon of her Bollywood career. Amrita Singh was 12 years senior to Saif and many had predicted that the union would be short-lived. Amrita left working in films and turned homemaker. The couple divorced in 2004. Saif himself was vehemently opposed to the triple talaq system and the two dissolved their marriage in court.
