OOP Digital Desk: The government is planning to regulate and monitor the functioning of social networking sites like WhatsApp, Skype, Facebook and others, in a bid to protect user data.

Counsels appearing for the government told the Supreme Court today that it wants to put a regulatory regime in place for the purpose.

A five-member constitution bench was hearing a case on the WhatsApp privacy policy.

The government informed the court that telecom service providers cannot share the personal data of users over social networking channels.

Senior lawyers Arvind Datar, Kapil Sibal, and Sidharth Luthra, appearing for Facebook and WhatsApp, informed the court, they are ready to give an undertaking that WhatsApp has never and will not share user data with anyone.
