OOP Digital Desk: New York-based popular news magazine, Time, has selected Gurmehar Kaur as one of the 10 leading “Next Generation Leaders” for 2017. Gurmehar has been hailed as a “free-speech warrior” by the magazine. The list also included Lilly Singh, the Punjab-Canadian YouTube vlogger and comedian, better known by her moniker ‘Superwoman’.
The 20-year old Gurmehar Kaur is a student of Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi. The girl from Jalandhar, shot to fame when she was widely trolled for speaking against the violence allegedly carried out by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists at Ramjas College in February. ABVP is the student front of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
Gurmehar is the daughter of an army officer who was killed in an encounter with terrorists in Kashmir. She was two years old back then. The Jalandhar girl was slammed when she appeared on the internet with a placard video, saying it was not Pakistan, but war which had killed her father.
Reacting to the news of her selection, Gurmehar Kaur said, her family is proud and happy. She now has greater responsibility on her shoulders, Gurmehar said, ruling out any possibility to join politics.
Gurmehar was threatened with rape and murder after she condemned ABVP. She left Delhi for a short while and returned later. Her book, Small Acts of Freedom, is slated to be published in 2018.
