OOP Digital Desk: The Karnataka government has decided not to give permission to hold a New Year event, in which Bollywood actress Sunny Leone was slated to perform, in the face of protests by several Kannada groups.
The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Yuve Sena (KRVYS) and some other organisations have been protesting the event which was scheduled to be held at the White Orchid ground, adjacent to Manyata Tech Park in Bengaluru, on 31 December. KRVYS activists said that the performance by the Jism 2 actress would be an “assault” to Kannada culture.
Sunny Leone was supposed to perform at the event along with some Bollywood and Kannada rappers.
The agitation by KRVYS and pro-Kannada groups has been going on in the city for the past one week. They burnt effigies and posters of the actress at various places in the city and elsewhere across the state.
Karnataka home minister, Ramalinga Reddy, told the media that he has instructed the authorities not to permit such events. People are opposing her presence. Let the organisers hold events that promote Kannada literature and culture, he said.
It’s our victory, a KRVYS official said, adding that they are happy that the government has cancelled the programme. Else, activists from 20 districts would have held a mega-protest rally at the venue, he warned.
